About Ear Surgery

Cosmetic ear surgery may be pursued for a variety of reasons and does not have an effect on the function of the ears or hearing. The outer exterior ear is the only area addressed, and the ears are repositioned into a more symmetric, aesthetically pleasing area. Ears that are prominent and may appear too large for the head or are angled toward the face have a smaller, proportional appearance after otoplasty surgery. The objective of ear surgery is to position the ears flatter against the head and/or minimize the overall size of the ears by correcting cartilage, skin, and the earlobes.

What are the benefits?

The benefits of otoplasty include the following:

  • The procedure only takes about one to three hours, and the results are long-term.
  • Otoplasty is considered a safe procedure with minimal risks.
  • Many patients experience increased self-confidence after protruding ears lie naturally against the head.
  • Otoplasty can be performed on both children and adults.

Your private consultation with Dr. Moses

If you are interested in otoplasty, your first step is a private consultation with Dr. Moses. Dr. Moses will go over your treatment options with you. She will also ask you questions about your desired results to create a customized treatment plan that allows you to achieve your aesthetic goals.

Preparing for surgery

Once you and Dr. Moses have finalized your treatment plan and you are ready to proceed, we will make an appointment for your surgery. Otoplasty is an outpatient procedure that can be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on Dr. Moses’ recommendations and your personal preferences. General anesthesia is generally preferred for children and teenagers.

Your otoplasty procedure

The surgery itself typically takes between one and three hours. Dr. Moses will make a small incision in your ear's inner crease or back during your surgery. She will then reshape the tissue of your ear, removing, folding, and shaping cartilage as needed per your surgical plan. Finally, she will close the incisions with stitches.

What is the recovery like?

You can expect to experience some swelling and discomfort during the first few days after your surgery, which should reside soon after. While Dr. Moses will instruct you to limit your physical activity for the first week or so, you should be able to return to work or school within two weeks.

What should I do during the recovery period?

Dr. Moses will provide detailed instructions to make your recovery as rapid and smooth as possible. She may recommend that you try to follow these guidelines:

  • Don’t use shampoo for the first week or so after surgery.
  • Avoid touching, rubbing, or scratching your ears.
  • Avoid putting pressure on your ears when resting or sleeping.
  • Keep your head elevated.
  • Limit or avoid any strenuous activity.

Will I need to come in to have my stitches removed?

This will depend on your treatment plan and what type of stitches Dr. Moses uses. Dissolvable stitches will dissolve on their own in about a week. Traditional stitches must be removed, typically about one week after surgery.
